COEASU plans strike on Tuesday

Two weeks after the Academic Staff Union of Universities suspended its strike, lecturers in the Colleges of Education are set to begin a nationwide strike on Tuesday.
This was stated in a letter served on the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike and a copy obtained by journalist in Abuja.
The letter was delivered by the General Secretary of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, Mr. Nuhu Ogirima, who lamented that the Federal Government had failed to address issues raised by the union.
The union's complaints are infrastructural decay, poor funding, non-implementation of the 2010 FG-COEASU Agreement, poor conditions of service, brain drain and illegal imposition of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System.
In the letter signed by the COEASU National President, Asagha Nkoro and Ogirima, the union accused the government of directing the National Commission for Colleges of Education to impose the IPPIS on colleges without recourse to earlier meetings by parties.
In compliance with the resolution of its Expanded National Executive Council Meeting, COEASU said its members had been directed to resume a full scale strike action suspended earlier this year, "unless and until government meets the demands".

"Eagles Will Win 2014 World Cup If..." – Guru Maharaj Ji

The Spiritual Leader of One Love Family, Satguru Maharaj Ji, has predicted victory for Super Eagles at the forthcoming 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
He made this known to Daily Independent at his Spiritual Village, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, while speaking on plans to mark his spiritual birthday on January 1, 2014.
Maharaj Ji was determined speaking about it:
"I have said it and nothing will change it. If the Super Eagles handler, Stephen Keshi, shows more love to Maharaj Ji, the true name of the Almighty. He will lead the team to victory that will shock the world.
"I want him and top shots of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to visit Maharaj Ji Village and let us have a discussion. Let them come and put Maharaj Ji's power to test. I cannot be here and Nigeria won't be able to conquer the world.
"I told them before that Eagles will win the Nation's Cup and so it was. The powers of Chukwujekwukwu will touch the players again and they will have strength to run faster as children of the light than any other team at the tournament. Nigerians should come and avail themselves of the opportunity of the power now.
"Keshi should humble himself more. I foresee the cup coming to Nigeria in 2014. Nigerians should stop doubting because the Living Perfect Master is talking. I think by now government in its own wisdom would have shown appreciation to me for the victory of Eagles at the last Nation's Cup. They should know that it is only by encouraging me that they receive more."
The Spiritual Leader proceeded:
"The players, particularly the goal keeper, should avoid wearing blue jersey which was one of the things that caused initial problems for the team during the Nation's Cup before an NFF top shot got across to me to intercede. Blue is the colour of mermaid. That is not ideal for any progressive development.
"I have said it loud and clear that the cup is within reach and definitely it will come to Nigeria if the sports administrators and the coaches take the advantage. I cautioned Samson Siasia, the former Eagles' handler, but he retorted saying 'is Satguru God'? That affected him and he was booted out.
"However, not only the Super Eagles, tell other national teams to come and receive the power to excel and it shall be well with them at any tournament," he assured.

Kenya request for a friendly match with the Super Eagles

Harambee Stars of Kenya have requested for a friendly with the Super Eagles of Nigeria in London in March, 2014.
According to the information by MTNFootball, Kenya Football Federation (KFF) have addressed the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for a friendly on March 5, 2014, in London.
Several officials supposed that the request by KFF may not see the light of day, as the NFF might be looking for a tougher opponent on that day, as it is the only free window approved by FIFA before the World Cup in Brazil.
Therefore, doubts over the possibility of such a re-match exist.
"I am not sure this can work even though we would have loved to honour it. We would be preparing for the World Cup and it's only right we play countries with similar football culture in our group at the World Cup," a source from the NFF said.
It would be recalled that Kenya were forced to a 1-1 draw by hosts Nigeria in a 2014 World Cup qualifier earlier this year, before the Eagles beat them 1-0 in Nairobi in a reverse fixture.
The Super Eagles are drawn against Argentina, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iran in the group stage of 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Eden Hazard goal gives Chelsea all 3 points

Chelsea defeats Swansea by 1-nil through Eden Hazard goal in the 29th minute at the Stamford Bridge, cutting in from the left before driving in low to the goal post.

There were opportunities for Chelsea goals before and after Eden Hazard cut in from the left wing to score the Boxing Day winner midway through the first half, but in the end it needed a solid performance to prevent a Swansea side that improved in the second half.
'Today I can say the biggest responsibility for the lack of goals was the Swansea goalkeeper because he made three or four big saves,' said Mourinho at the club official website. After this game,Chelsea is ranked 3rd behind Manchester City with 37 points.

Arsenal back on top with a win against West Ham

Arsenal came back from a goal down to hammer West Ham United 3-1 at Upton Park in their Barclays Premier League match on Boxing Day.
Carlton Cole put West Ham United ahead early in the second half before the Arsenal turned things around with a Theo Walcott brace and a Lukas Podolski goal.

Arsenal found the equaliser in the 68th minute through a goalkeeping howler. Walcott drifted infield from the right with the ball, and drilled a seemingly harmless shot straight at the keeper.

The 'Gunners' scored another goal through Walcott from Podolski beautifull cross.Arsenal made the score line 3-1 in 79th minute through podolski Goal. After this match,Arsenal is ranked first with 39 points.

Omeruo stopped from training with Chelsea reserves

Kenneth Omeruo received a massive boost to his Chelsea future after manager Jose Mourinho ordered he stop training with the reserves.
“Mourinho has directed that Kenneth only train with the main squad of Chelsea and no longer also with the reserves,” Omeruo’s adviser Chika Akujobi informed M TNFootball.com
“This clearly shows the increased confidence the coach has in the player.”
However, it is most likely the Nigeria international defender will still be shipped out of loan when the winter transfer window opens next month.
“Chelsea are studying various loan offers for Kenneth. They want him to enjoy regular playing time and so will work with a club who can guarantee this,” Akujobi said.
“But most importantly they want him to stay back in England.”

There have been several interests for the Eagles star mostly from clubs in the English Championship.
Omeruo, who first played on loan for a season and a half at Dutch club ADO Den Haag, will need to start playing first-team football in the new year, which is also a World Cup year.

“This country belongs to our statesmen, traditional rulers, religious leaders, our men, our women, our youths. Nigeria does not belong to any politician or group of politicians. So, we will continue to urge the clergymen to pray for this country.” Jonathan said

FG condemns ASUU demands

The Federal Government, yesterday, condemned the new conditions which Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, insists must be met before the five-month old strike could be called off.

The three conditions were payment of four months salaries, which accumulated during the period of the strike; immediate implementation of the N1.2 trillion offered by the government to public universities, starting with the release of N100 billion this year and the balance of N1.1 trillion to be spread over five years from 2014.

The union also demanded that the salary arrears must not be paid in piecemeal.

These were some of the resolutions reached by members of the National Executive Council, NEC, of the union that met in Kano on Friday.

Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, condemned the new conditions but assured that he would present them before President Goodluck Jonathan.

EBSU breaks ranks, recalls students
Meanwhile, the management of Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, EBSU, yesterday ordered lecturers and students of the institution to return to classes following the inability of ASUU to end its strike.

A statement by the Registrar of the institution, Mr. Sam Egwu, stressed that the institution had resolved to resume academic activities regardless of the ASUU-FG dispute, adding that academic activities would resume in all the campuses of the institution from today, Tuesday, November 26.

EBSU chapter of ASUU however, said that lecturers would not return to classes until their demands were met in line with the position of its national body.

Chelsea cruise past Shalke 04 as Torres shines

Fit-again Fernando Torres sparkled on his 100th start for Chelsea, scoring twice to help the 2012 winners outclass Schalke 04 3-0 to go top of Champions League Group E on Tuesday.
Torres produced a flying header at the far post after Branislav Ivanovic had flicked on a Frank Lampard corner in the fifth minute.

The Spain striker, back in the starting line-up following a knee injury, struck again in the 69th minute when he raced clear to beat keeper Timo Hildebrand after earlier rattling the bar with a powerful header.
Eden Hazard made it 3-0 after running half the length of the field as Chelsea, who last played on German soil when they beat Bayern Munich in the 2012 final, took their points tally to six, level with Schalke but with a much better goal difference.
Basle drew 1-1 with bottom club Steaua Bucharest and are in third place on four points.
"I feel we are improving as a team and the last few games I have felt very sharp," Torres told Sky Sports television.

"We were lucky to score the first goal early. In the second half our individual quality made the difference.
"To have got six points away from home is very important," added Torres, referring to Chelsea's previous victory in Bucharest.
It was also coach Jose Mourinho's first away win against a German team, having lost all previous six visits in his career.
The Portuguese opted to start Torres up front instead of Cameroon international Samuel Eto'o who was on target in the Premier League last Saturday.

"I put faith in Fernando and he answered well. It's a good feeling to score winning goals in the Champions League," said Mourinho.
"That was an important victory for us. I told my players after the Basle defeat that the performance was garbage and we had to clean it up and we have done that with two consecutive victories away.

"We were under pressure after the first game but now, after this result, we are in a good position," added Mourinho.
Schalke, who had won their first two games, had the lion's share of possession but, hampered by a string of injuries that kept several players out including forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, they lacked bite up front.
"It was very unfortunate to concede first from a set-piece," said coach Jens Keller. "We had chances and we should have taken one of them because you don't get many against a quality side like Chelsea."

Lionel messi gives Barcelona lead in the championsip league group H

Lionel Messi slipped past tight AC Milan marking to score in his first start since injury and give Barcelona a 1-1 draw on Tuesday that keeps them two points clear at the top of Champions League Group H.

The Argentine struck in the 23rd minute with a slick finish to a breakaway move to cancel out Robinho's stylish ninth minute opener, which came during a frantic opening period of pressure from the home side.
Barcelona moved up to seven points, with unbeaten Milan in second spot on five, two ahead of Celtic who beat Ajax 2-1 in Glasgow.
However, coach Gerardo Martino was less than happy with a point from a match he felt Barca should have won.
"I think with the way the match went we dropped two points tonight. A point isn't any good for us and we deserved more. We created chances and deserved to win," Argentine Martino told Sky Sport Italia.
"It didn't work for the first ten minutes of the match, we gave Milan the initiative. We didn't play like we did for the remaining 80 minutes and we paid for it."

Milan, who were missing three of their usual attackers from their starting line-up, including Mario Balotelli, came racing out of the blocks, putting pressure on Barca's backline and a defensive error led to Robinho's goal.
The Brazilian beat the away side's dithering defenders to a high bouncing ball, and after exchanging passes with revitalised-looking countryman Kaka, slid a simple finish past Victor Valdes.
"Kaka played extraordinarily well. He had to play almost as a full back in the second half," said Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri.
"To be a champions you can't only do it with your feet, but also with your head. Kaka showed that tonight once again."

Lewandowski's goal sinks Arsenal hopes

Robert Lewandowski's late volleyed winner earned Dortmund a 2-1 victory at a rain-soaked Emirates Stadium to throw Group F wide open just when Arsenal seemed capable of cruising through to the last 16 from a formidable section.

Without reproducing the scintillating form of recent weeks Arsenal were set for a point after Olivier Giroud cancelled out Henrikh Mkhitaryan's opener just before halftime but Lewandowski's composed 82nd minute strike condemned Arsenal to a third home defeat in a row against German opposition.
It ended a 12-match unbeaten run in all competitions for the Londoners and left Wenger's side tied on six points with last year's European Cup runners-up Dortmund and Napoli and a daunting looking away game to come in Germany in two weeks.

"We were not as good as we can be offensively and some of the players tonight were not as fresh as recently," Wenger told reporters. "If you can't win games you mustn't lose them.
"In the second half we were on top but if you concede two goals you can only say we have to look at ourselves at not being mature enough in situations like that.

"It's tight now and difficult for us. But possible," added Wenger whose side will need points from their away games in Dortmund and Napoli to reach the knockout rounds.

Sweden held to a draw by Nigeria

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets came from behind twice on Tuesday to hold Sweden 3-3 at Khalifa Bin Zayed Stadium in Al-Ain.
Eaglets hit the ground immediately knocking at the opponents door but at each occasion the Europeans backline held on.

The Swedes created their fair share of scary moments as Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Dele Alampasu fumbled in most occasions. However, his inaccuracy at ball was lashed in on by forward, Valmir Berishe to put his side up in the 11th minute and was on song again in the 19th minute for the side second goal.
Isaac Success was to conjure a goal in the 22nd minute for his side after he squeezed himself free from two defenders to unleash a thunderous shot that beat the Mexican goalkeeper.
Both sides retired for the first term break with the Europeans firmly leading 2-1.

Eaglets resumed the second term more business like anxiously looking for the equaliser and it was Musa Yahaya whose shot was badly parried to slip into the net for Nigeria’s second goal.
Thereafter, it became a dingdong affair as both sides tried every trick in their book to undo each other but it was the Swedes who once again broke the ice as substitute, Halvadzic edged his side forward in the 65th minute.
Eaglets fought back strongly through substitute, Taiwo Awoniyi who drew level in the 81st minute to save his side from imminent defeat.
Efforts thereafter to grab the winner was rebuffed by the Mexicans as the Argentine referee, Juan Pablo Beletti sounded the whistle to end the thrilling encounter.
Both sides are level on four points but Nigeria lead the Group F log on superior goals.
Eaglets will head to Dubai to face the group weeping child, Iraq while Sweden will face resurgent title holders, Mexico on Friday.

However,Nigeria must avoid defeat against Iraq to be certain for passage to the knockout stage campaign at the ongoing Fifa Under-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

ASUU regects FG offers again

Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, yesterday, rejected. the N130 billion the Federal Government disbursed into the university system, as part of efforts to persuade striking lecturers to call off the strike which began on July 2.

In a letter written to Head of National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy, NEEDs Assessment, and Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswan, by President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge. The union insisted that based on the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement and the January 2012 Memoranda of Understanding, MoU, signed by both parties, what was due for 2012 and 2013 was N500 billion, not N100 billion.

The letter read: “We observe that the Committee is so far mentioning only N100 billion. If the implementation is to be related to the funding requirements in the 2009 ASUU/FGN agreement and the Jan 2012 MoU, what is due for 2012 and 2013 is N500 billion not N100 billion. Only the provision of this sum will meet the immediate needs of the universities.

“Our Union is very apprehensive of the manner in which the sources of the initial N100 billion to be used for the stimulation of the process are shrouded in secrecy. We believe that monies that already belong to the university system should not be blocked and recycled.
“This will not only be counterproductive but will brew even deeper crises in the system. ASUU will not accept this.
“We are also concerned that a clear procedure or process for assessing the funds by the universities is yet to be defined. This concern is even more germane, given the statement of the Chairman of the Committee (during the last meeting on Monday, August 19, 2013) that the committee is taking some documents to the Due Process Office.
“We hasten to add that while due process must be followed, it is the sole responsibility of benefitting universities to respect all the provisions of the Procurement Act. The meaning of your Committee going to the Due Process Office is that it is the one that will be responsible for awarding contracts.

“We want to make it clear that this will never be acceptable to our union. We believe that monies meant to fund projects in universities should be sent to the universities, just as it is the practice with TETFund.”
The union condemned allocation of construction of 2,500 bed space hostel for N1billion, instead of 3,000 bed space for N1.2 billion.
“We are worried that instead of allocating N1.2 billion each to construct 3,000 bed space hostels to the 10 Category 1 universities, N1.0 billion for 2,500 bed space hostel to the 16 Category 2 universities, N500 million to construct 1,250 bed space hostels in the 12 Category 3 universities and N250 million each to construct 625 bed space hostels in the 13 Category 4 universities, the secretariat has changed that to constructing 1,400 bed space hostels in 25 universities at the cost of N2 billion each. We see no rationale in this.
“Expending N50 billion to construct 35,000 bed space hostels across 25 universities will be ridiculously scandalous since the same amount can be used to construct 125,000 bed space hostels across 51 universities. The standard cost of building a bed space ranges from N200,000.00 to a maximum of N400,000.00.

“This is even more worrisome, given the tangential suggestions made by the chairman that only monies for refurbishment will be sent to universities, while the rest will be handled centrally,” the union said.
The union also condemned the exclusion of 22 universities from the allocation for refurbishment of laboratories and libraries and three universities from the allocation for refurbishment of lecture theatres and lecture rooms.

According to ASUU, 24 universities are denied allocation for construction of libraries and laboratories, while two are denied allocation for construction of new lecture theatres and lecture rooms. 26 universities are denied allocation for construction of hostel.

Ghana half way to brazil after their 6-1 thrashing of Egypt

Ghana effectively sealed their trip to Brazil when they thrashed Egypt 6-1 at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on Tuesday evening in their 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifier first leg play-off match.

A brace by Asamoah Gyan, goals each by Majeed Waris, Sulley Muntari, Christian Atsu and an own goal by Wael Gomaa were contributors to the Black Stars' goals. A penalty by Mohamed Aboutrika was the consolation goal for Egypt.
Ghana could have taken the lead just seconds into the match when Gyan found himself unmarked just inside the box but with all the time in the world the Ghana captain rushed his shot and it was easily saved by Egyptian keeper Sherif Ekrami.
Gyan put the Ghanaians in front in the fifth minute as he atoned for his earlier let off. He collected the ball on the edge of the box and sent through a powerful low shot from an awkward angle to make it 1-0 to the Black Stars and send the Kumasi crowd into frenzy.

Egypt were again under siege in the 14th minute when Kwado Asamoah found space on the left flank and with only the keeper to beat he saw his shot saved.
Ghana were certainly having the upper and giving the Egyptian defence a torrid time and in the 21st minute they doubled their through a superb yet fortunate way. Michael Essien dribbled his way past the Egyptians, with their defence at his mercy, the goal area open he seemed to have dribbled one too many times, the ball was disowned from him but it deflected off Gomaa and into the net.

Five minutes before the halftime break Egypt were given a penalty after Rashid Sumaila clumsily fouled Mohamed Salah in the box. Aboutrika scored from the spot kick for the Pharoahs as he sent Ghana’s Orlando Pirates keeper thw wrong way as he pulled one goal back for Egypt to make it 2-1.
Just on the stroke of halftime Ghana reclaimed their two goal advantage. Warris connected with a Sulley Muntari free kick and headed from close range to make it 3-1 in the 44th minute.
Seven minutes into the second half Ghana made it 4-1. The visitors failed to deal with Muntari’s acrobatic bicycle kick attempt and the ball fell onto the path of Gyan who reacted faster than the static Egyptian backline and headed home from close range.

Egypt were dealt a huge blow when they had to make their third and final change which was enforced when their keeper Ekrami was forced out with an injury.
He was replaced byAhmed Naser El Shenawy who later conceded a paenlty in the 70th minute when he fouled Waris inside the box. Muntari sealed it for the Black Stars as he scored from the penalty spot to make it 5-1.

Atsu sealed the win for Ghana in the 87th minute when he danced past a couple of Egypt defenders and let rip a low ferocious shot into the back of the net to make it 6-1.

International Friendly:Zambia beaten by Brazil in China

Zambia were beaten 2-0 by Brazil in a friendly international match in Beijing, China on Tuesday.
Brazil, who will host next year's World Cup, scored through Oscar and Dede.

Zambia were without three regulars after a row with their club TP Mazembe in Democratic Republic of Congo.
TP Mazembe insisted Rainford Kalaba, Stoppila Sunzu and Nathan Sinkala were injured, leading to a dispute with the Zambian FA and the involvement of the Zambian government.
After examining the players in Lusaka, the Zambian FA said they should still travel to Beijing, but Mazembe requested their return.
That led to the intervention of the Zambian government who took away the players' passports so they could not go back to their club in Lubumbashi.

However, the players managed to cross the border between the countries and are believed to be back in DR Congo. Zambia has since issued warrants for the arrest of the players.
The Zambian FA has written to football's world governing body Fifa, complaining that Mazembe did not release their players as they are required to do for international dates.
Chipolopolo's match against Brazil was the first between the countries.

The 2012 Africa Cup of Nations champions were playing their first game under 35-year-old interim coach Patrice Beaumelle, who took over eight days ago after Herve Renard left the job.
Zambia failed to qualify for next year's tournament having been eliminated from qualifying at the group stage.

Fake police commissioner arrested in Abuja

Attempt by a middle-aged man to present himself as a senior police commissioner and curry favour from unsuspecting government agencies in the Federal Capital Territory, has backfired, exposing him as fake Assistant Police Commissioner.

Convinced that Kunle Adeshola, who also goes by the names of Dr. Kunle Shoal, Dr K. Adeshola and Sunday Mealayeshe Adekunle was not sincere in his exploits, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, immediately arrested and detained him in their custody.
A statement from the commission made available to Vanguard yesterday, described the suspect as a serial impostor and self-acclaimed Assistant Commissioner of Police who has been parading himself as an operative of the EFCC and defrauding officials of government agencies under the guise of conducting phantom investigations.

The statement, which was signed by EFCC
spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, said Adeshola was nabbed on Thursday October 10, 2013 while trying to hoodwink the head of an unnamed federal government agency to write a letter supposedly to the Inspector General of Police to transfer him to the EFCC.
According to the agency, the unsuspecting CEO wrote the pleading with the IG to second the fraudster to his agency with a view to sanitising the place.

It was however leant that the suspects pocketed the letter and made the CEO to believe that the IG had sanctioned his deployment to the agency and was about to resume work there.
However, EFCC agents arrested the suspect before he could “resume duties” at the agency.
At the time of his arrest two fake identity cards were found on him, one of the cards bearing the name Dr. K Adeshola (ACP) identifies him as a staff of a nonexistent EFCC Monitoring Unit while the other is a police ID card with number: APF NO. 02576 with the name, Dr. Kunle Adeshola
Search in his apartment in Lugbe, a suburb of Abuja yielded a number of documents suspected to be fake. They included copies of NYSC Exemption Certificates and blank copies of University of Jos certificate

International Friendly:Nigeria play Italy on November 18

The Italian Football Federation has confirmed the Azzurri will play the Super Eagles in London on November 18 as preparation for the 2014 World Cup.
The friendly is one of three for the Eagles who will host the Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia on November 16 in Calabar in the second leg of the World Cup qualifying playoff.

The FGIC said on its website on Sunday that the Azzurri would also play Germany at San Siro in Milan three days before flying to London to play Nigeria.
The Nigeria Football Federation said besides Italy, Nigeria would also play Jordan on October 28.
The Jordan friendly, which will be played in the country's capital Amman, will feature players from the Nigeria Premier League as a build-up to the African Nations Championship in January in South Africa.

It will be the first time both countries are meeting in football in any category and it will serve as Jordan's preparation for their World Cup playoff match against Uruguay.
An NFF official told our correspondent on the telephone on Sunday that the team list would be released this week ahead of a camping in Abuja before going to Amman.
"The outcome of Sunday's World Cup qualifier against Ethiopia will determine which team we'll settle for in the third friendly. For now, there are only Italy and Jordan on the card," the official, who said he was not authorised to give the details, said.

Nigeria are drawn against hosts South Africa, Mali and Mozambique in the first round of the CHAN.

Enugu sacks 138 School Principals Over Age Falsification.

One hundred and thirty-eight Chief Supervising Principals, CSPs, recently appointed by Enugu State Government for various schools in the 17 local government areas of the state have been compulsorily retired for allegedly falsifying their ages.
The list of those retired was released yesterday and pasted on the notice board of state Post Primary School Management Board, PPSMB.
Some of them were said to have spent between five years and above after attaining their official retirement age due to falsification of records.
Vanguard gathered that most of those elevated to chief supervising principals by the PPSMB on the directive of the state Ministry of Education, were so reluctant accepting their new positions and postings because of the huge income they expected to rake in from new students’ admission this term.
But the PPSMB insisted that they must comply with the directive and compelled them to update their records but in doing so, the affected persons falsified their ages in order to spend more years in service even when they were due to retire soon.
Some of the appointed Principals had alleged that they parted with huge sums of money to influence their appointments and having allegedly greased the palms of the officials in-charge went ahead to falsify their documents to enable them remain in service fraudulently.
But following discreet investigations into their claims particularly as it affects their date of birth and years spent in service, it was discovered that the affected persons falsified their ages.
Sources said that more of the identified culprits would be sent packing as the 138 CSPs published are in the first batch.

NLC Petitions IG Over Alleged Brutalisation Of Teachers In Rivers.

In the petition by Acting General Secretary, Chris Uyot, NLC argued that in view of the alleged unwarranted and unlawful attack on law-abiding citizens, it was demanding “an apology from the Nigeria Police; a firm assurance from the Police to conduct itself in the future in line with civilized norms and rules of engagement; an investigation of this despicable and ignominious conduct; the evacuation of the police from Obio/Akpor Local Government Secretariat for workers to resume work, and the posting of Mr. Joseph Mbu out of Rivers State for free and unfettered investigation but especially for his excesses, and his inability to inspire confidence in the contending parties in the state.”

The petition reads in part, “The conduct of the police was unnecessary, shameful, ill-advised, contemptuous, illegal and a throw-back to the dark ages. The right to freely and peacefully associate is guaranteed by our constitution and does not reside with any individual, no matter how-highly placed. Even in untowardly circumstances, there are rules of engagement, let alone in a situation where teachers had no motive other than to collect their letters of posting.

We are inclined to believe Mr. Joseph Mbu, the State Commissioner of Police who directed this heinous attack was not acting at your behest because we recall you came into office with a new code of conduct which Nigerians applauded. Need we remind overzealous, blood-thirsty and sycophantic officers like Mbu that we are old enough as a nation and sufficiently experienced as citizens of this country to know that it does little good when an officer of his rank compromises his institution or code of conduct in order to appease insular and selfish motives.”
“We also had cause earlier to draw your attention to the deliberate closure of Obio/Akpor Local Government Secretariat at the behest of the State Commissioner of Police.”

ASUU:VC'S to meet in akure on monday

Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities will meet in Akure, Ondo State, on Monday to deliberate on the strike embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

This came as students of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife on Wednesday, urged the Federal Government to implement immediately the various agreements it reached with labour unions in the nation’s tertiary institutions.

Also, OAU lecturers have insisted that the ongoing nationwide strike is not politically motivated.

Lecturers in the public universities embarked on strike last July to protest against the non-implementation of the agreement they reached with the FG in 2009.

Other associations like the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union have also threatened to embark on industrial action to protest the non-implementation of agreements they reached with the FG.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Prof. Adedayo Fasakin, while addressing journalists in Akure on Wednesday, said the vice-chancellors would also discuss other problems facing the nation’s universities.

CBN Bans Importation Of Foreign Currency.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has banned the importation of all foreign currencies except with approval. This was contained in a statement signed by CBN Director of Corporate Communications, Mr Ugo Okoroafor, on Tuesday in Abuja. It said that the move was sequel to the Bank's withdrawal of the operating licence of 20 Bureaux de Change (BDCs).
The CBN alleged that the BDCs purchased and sold huge sums of U.S. dollars with no documentation to show details of the transactions. The statement quoted the Deputy Governor, Economic Policy, Dr Sarah Alade, as saying that the CBN frowned at the existence of strong foreign exchange demand pressure from domestic sources. She said that the CBN had observed a surge in dollar cash importation by banks and the huge cash sales of the dollars to BDCs by the banks. She disclosed that the purchase and sale of the cash were not adequately documented by the BDCs.
Alade said that if the trend was not contained, it could pose grave threats to the value of the naira as well as the Nigerian economy which had gradually become dollarised. She said the CBN Governor, Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, and his team decided to take immediate action to safeguard the naira and ensure its stability in the face of the aforementioned challenges. Meanwhile, the CBN has also announced that the Retail Dutch Auction System (RDAS) would take effect from Oct. 2. This followed the suspension of the Wholesale Dutch Auction System (WDAS) at the official foreign exchange market.
It said that the RDAS would allow only customers of deposit money banks to buy foreign exchange at the CBN through their banks. This is against the WDAS where the deposit money banks bought foreign exchange at the CBN on their own accounts and in turn sold to their customers.
"The re-introduction of the RDAS is expected to prevent round tripping of foreign exchange purchased at the CBN official window to unauthorised channels. "Also, a circular has been issued mandating all deposit money banks to redeem all inward money transfers in naira to the recipients at the prevailing inter-bank foreign exchange rate. "This is in line with best practice,'' it said.
The statement said that apex bank would continue to support the operations of BDCs in line with existing guidelines, adding that BDCs were still relevant in the foreign exchange market.
"To guard against stifling the activities of the BDCs, the CBN has authorised all deposit money banks to deal at the official foreign exchange market rate. "It also warned that banks can only sell foreign exchange cash to BDCs subject to a maximum of 250,000 dollars per week per BDC.
"The CBN also advised all BDCs to continue to comply with the conditions of their operating licences, including the proper rendition of returns with respect to the purchases and sales of foreign exchange.''
The statement said that the apex bank had assured members of the public of its commitment to maintaining price stability and the preservation of the value of the naira in accordance with its mandate

Here are 7 signs your woman is losing interest.
1).Dialing Out:She has not picked up your phone call in a few days, when you normally used to talk two to three times a day. She keeps coming up with different excuses as to why she is ignoring you, but her stories are not satisfactory.
2).She gets secretive: Women are known for wanting to share their stories and experiences with loved ones, especially the man in their life. Have you noticed she has not told you anything personal lately? This could be a sign that she no longer relies or connects with you.
3).Suspicious activities:When she picks up calls from other men while with you, or flirt with others without giving any consideration for how you feel, this could mean she does not respect you or your feelings, and that usually happen when she no longer had feelings for you.
4).Lack Of Physical Contact:She avoids physical contact with you. You cannot even hold her hand without her cringing in disgust. This is a definite sign that something is wrong.
5). No more fighting:This is perhaps the most subtle and the most overlooked. If your relationship had been rocky for some time now (you guys were having lots of fights) and lately she just suddenly stops arguing with you or has nothing to say when a fight comes up, don't make the mistake of taking this to mean all your problems are solved. Often, women express their feelings with words, so when she stops talking, you should start worrying.
6). She avoids family/friends gatherings:Often times, women feel guilty when they are about to end a relationship and hanging out with your buddies when she knows she is about to break up with you soon will only make her feel guiltier. So she will more likely avoid a situation where she will have to be around your loved ones (friends or family). It is also the same if she tries to prevent you from hanging out with her own friends/family.
7). She does not invite you to share:Just like she would not want to talk to you about her problems/experience, she will also not ask you to talk about yours. She no longer cares if you had a bad day, and when you do talk to her, she probably just give you non-committal responses like nodding and mumbling. She also does not contribute to such conversations anymore

PHCN workers begin strike on 2nd October,2013

The already deplorable power situation in the country may worsen as employees of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) have threatened to stop the supply of electricity across the country by October 2 if the federal government goes ahead to handover the assets of the company to private investors today without the conclusion of payment of workers entitlements. The industrial action follows the expiration of the ultimatum issued by the workers to government to resolve all labour issues ahead of the privatisation of PHCN. In preparation for the industrial action, the workers will today hold a nationwide protest to alert Nigerians of impending shutdown of the power sector on Wednesday.Speaking under the umbrella of National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), the union directed its members to withdraw their services from all PHCN installations immediately after the celebration of the nation’s 53 Independence anniversary. The union, in a statement issued by its secretary, Joe Ajaero, said the industrial action became necessary in view of government refusal to resolve the outstanding labour issues with the workers. The union said it was particularly disturbed by the statement credited to the Chairman of National Council on Privatisation (NCP), Vice-President Namadi Sambo that government had settled all the labour issues which had impeded the smooth take off of the privatisation programme and the handover to private investors. The union insisted that the vice-president was either being misled or deliberately keen on emasculating the PHCN workers with a view to further impoverishing them. It challenged the Office of the Vice-President “to mention any person from his constituency - Kaduna State where he served as governor, who has been paid his entitlement, pension and gratuity.” The union further alleged governments deployment of military personnel to all PHCN facilities stating that the aim was to ostensibly to allow a forceful takeover of the installations without conclusively settling the labour issues. It noted that the policy of deploying soldiers to PHCN installations to intimidate workers was “definitely misguided and misdirected as they are directed to creating more tension to already tensed polity.” The statement read: “For clarity, please note that these issues are outstanding: payments of terminal benefits: payment of the terminal benefits is yet to rise up to 50 per cent for the eligible workers. Non-payment of retirement savings fund to Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs): Up till this moment no efforts has been made to commence payment. The PFAs can attest to this fact. Non-remittance of 2 per cent of the union deductions as agreed: No word has been heard from the BPE/government on remittance of this two person neither has the deductions already made from the paid workers remitted to the unions.” “Non-payment of retirees who disengaged since 2011: It is absurd and sordid for government not to think of settling these people who laboured over the years in service of this country and get retired meritoriously, while the privatisation exercise was on. Non-regularisation of some of the casuals already identified: With the biometrics done and concluded, it becomes worrisome on the continued delay in regularising the casuals who had been identified based on agreements already entered into. 10 per cent equity shareholding by the workers: In line with the relevant laws, the workers are entitled to 10 per cent Equity Share of the total sale of PHCN. But it appears the government is bent on short changing the workers.” “The shortfall of terminal benefits from June 2012 till date has not been considered for payment. “These contending issues cannot be jettisoned by the workers to allow any force to takeover! It behooves us therefore to advise the vice-president and those misguiding him not to toy with the socio-economic lives of PHCN workers, their families and other Nigerians who depend on them for their livelihood. We are set to take our destiny in our hands. “Because of Independence Day ceremonies, we would be patient to allow for full celebrations. “However, we hereby urge Nigerians to bear with us if after October 2, the government goes ahead with her illicit handover to the investors and forceful takeover; the implication would be that the workers have technically been asked to withdraw their services and we may not be able to guarantee smooth operations. Consequently, if after October 2, the Office of the Vice-President fails to correct this misleading information, we shall not guarantee supply of electricity in the country. This is not a threat as our earlier ultimatum has expired.”

78 Student Killed Yesterday By Boko Haram In Yobe College Of Agriculture 29th September,2013.

Gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram sect members yesterday went on rampage in Gujba community, Yobe state where they opened fire on the students of the College of Agriculture, Gujba, at 3a.m. as they slept in their hostels. They later moved to other houses, where they killed residents at will. They also blocked the Damaturu-Maiduguri road and killed travellers. At the end of the attack, 78 persons lay dead, while several others were still missing. According to members of the community, soldiers arrived the scene two hours after the gunmen had left. The gunmen were said to be wearing military camouflage with black bandanas round their heads. An official of Damaturu Specialist Hospital, who requested anonymity, said “immediately after the attack, 40 bodies were brought to the morgue and all are believed to have been students of the College of Agriculture in Gujba.” The number, however, increased as more bodies were recovered from the bush. Military spokesman, Lazarus Eli told newsmen that security forces were at the scene, but that details on the number of dead and injured were not yet available. He added that the early morning assault was targeted at the College of Agriculture in Gujba, Yobe State. “It was carried out by Boko Haram terrorists, who went into the school and opened fire on students while they were sleeping,” he added. A police source, who requested anonymity, said that initial reports indicated the death toll could be higher, but he was not prepared to discuss figures. Provost of the College, Molima Idi Mato, said: “They attacked our students while they were sleeping in their hostels. They opened fire at them.” He said he could not give an exact death toll as security forces were still recovering bodies of students mostly aged between 18 and 22. ”The school’s surviving students have fled,” he added. One of the surviving students, Idris, who would not give his first name, said: “They started gathering students into groups outside, then they opened fire and killed one group and then moved onto the next group and killed them. “It was so terrible. They came with guns around 1a.m. and went directly to the male hostel and opened fire on them” Ahmed Gujunba, a taxi driver who lives by the college said: “The college is in the bush, so the other students were running around helplessly as guns went off and some of them were shot down.” Gujba is about 30 kilometres (18 miles) from Damaturu, the state capital. Yobe has seen a series of brutal attacks targeting students in recent months, all blamed on Boko Haram. By afternoon after the attack, scores of travellers were also killed, by suspected members of Boko Haram in YobeState. The militants were said to have blocked Damaturu-Maiduguri Road, shooting indiscriminately. An eyewitness, who was on his way to Maiduguri, told the media that at least 20 persons were killed. The witness said: “The situation is terrible. They blocked our way, and were spraying people with bullets. “Some of us managed to run into the bush. At least, 20 persons were shot dead in the three buses before us.” NGF seeks end to attacks Meanwhile, the Northern States Governors’ Forum, yesterday, urged security agencies to “take urgent steps to halt the senseless killing of defenceless citizens.” Speaking through its chairman, Governor Babangida Aliyu of NigerState, the forum in a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Danladi Ndayebo, also called for an end to “attacks on places of worship and educational facilities.” It said: “The forum is particularly alarmed that the shooting to death of 38 students of the College of Agriculture, Gujba, YobeState, followed the same pattern as the killing of 22 students and a teacher at GovernmentSecondary School, Mamudo, in the same state last July.” It called on security agencies to intensify efforts at protecting the lives and property of citizens, and also ensure that those behind the violence in the region, were apprehended and brought to justice. Mark, Ndoma-Egba condemn massacre Senate President, David Mark and Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba, have described the massacre of scores of students at the college by gunmen as a dastardly act and unfortunate as it has a negative impact on the future of Nigeria. The Senate President and the Senate Leader in their separate condolences commiserated with the people and government of YobeState over the massacre Senator Mark said: “Violence has never produced any positive result neither has it any solution to problems or grievances. “If you have any grievances, the only way out is through dialogue. Resorting to killing others can only add to the problem and not solution. “There are more than enough channels of communication and ways of redressing misgivings. “These killings, especially innocent citizens are not part of our culture. They are truly alien to us. All right thinking members of the society must rise up to end this carnage raging our land.”

President Jonathan offers no plan to resolve ASUU crisis, says strike politicized.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday offered the clearest sign yet that his administration was in no haste to resolve the three-month-old strike by university lecturers, calling their demands “politicized” and urging the lecturers to return to work for the sake of the students. On his fifth presidential media chat on the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, the president said the nation’s bitter politics had crept into the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, and was responsible for the refusal of the lecturers to suspend their action despite the government’s effort. “In the past, they did not go this far when strikes were called off; but now politics has gone into everything,” the president said. He did not elaborate when pressed further by a five-member interview panel on his claim about ASUU demands being politicized. Mr. Jonathan said his administration had made concessions for the strike to be resolved, and has demonstrated remarkable commitment to addressing the massive infrastructure in the universities, one of the key demands ASUU has made. He said the lecturers have refused to accept the government’s explanations that broad range reforms cannot be achieved instantly. “ASUU strike is very very unfortunate,” Mr Jonathan, himself a former lecturer, said. He said crisis in education, in developing countries would always continue. The president said the biggest indication to his government’s commitment to such reforms was the decision to catalogue the perennial rot afflicting all the universities. “Throughout this time, no government has taken inventory of all the problems in federal and state universities,” the president said. “We said this must change. But it cannot change overnight. So for ASUU to go on strike over infrastructure, they need to understand that we are serious about intervening starting with N100 billion.” The president’s remarks on the strike was his first since lecturers downed tools in June, asking for improved pay and better funding for universities. They vowed not to resume until the government fully implements the last agreement both sides reached in 2009. The lecturers have vowed not to accept partial implementation of the agreement, with multiple intervention by the Senate and the House of Representatives stalemated. The government said the challenges of improved funding requires more time, and claims it has made concessions by providing initial funding. As the negotiations deadlock, millions of students have remained stranded at home with each claim of quick resolution to the crisis turning out unrealistic. Mr Jonathan’s comments on Sunday provided the strongest indication yet, that, save a change in decision, students will remain at home longer as the crisis stretches without a resolution. Asked specifically what the way forward would be for the strike, the president said he was calling on the lecturers to resume work for the sake of the Nigerian children and to realize that the government was committed to improving education. He said the 2009 agreement which ASUU has harped upon, was negotiated by officials incapable for such a responsibility as the agreement was “not implementable”. “Even if we have all the money in the world we cannot change things overnight,” he said. “The members of ASUU are our brothers and sisters, they should look at these young people and look at the commitment of govt.”
